Wealth & Finance Glossary - Key Terms Explained
Understand key wealth and finance terms - net worth, liquidity, IPO, conglomerate, philanthropy, and more. Plain-language definitions.
Net Worth
The total value of everything a person owns (stocks, real estate, cash, businesses) minus everything they owe (debts, loans). It's the standard measure of personal wealth.
Liquidity
How quickly an asset can be converted to cash without losing value. Cash is perfectly liquid; a skyscraper is highly illiquid - it could take months to sell.
IPO (Initial Public Offering)
When a private company first sells shares to the public on a stock exchange. This often creates enormous wealth for founders overnight as their private shares become publicly valued.
Conglomerate
A large company made up of several different, often unrelated businesses. Berkshire Hathaway owns insurance companies, railroads, restaurants, and holds stakes in Apple and Coca-Cola.
Philanthropy
The practice of donating wealth to charitable causes. Many billionaires have signed the Giving Pledge, committing to give away more than half their fortune during their lifetime.
Real-Time Billionaires List
Forbes' continuously updated ranking of the world's wealthiest people. Unlike the annual list, it adjusts throughout each trading day as stock prices change.
Forbes
An American business magazine founded in 1917 that publishes the definitive annual ranking of the world's billionaires and tracks their wealth throughout the year.
